Jan Jansen (1962, PhD Leiden 1995) has specialized in the study of oral tradition. He conducted extensive fieldwork in the region southwest of Mali's capital Bamako, and he has published extensively on the history of the Mali Empire. He has produced - often in collaboration with Malian scholars - numerous critical text editions of oral traditions. Jan Jansen’s current research projects focus on the eighteenth-century political history of the West African Sudan, and on the epistemological and methodological consequences of applying new recording and documentation technology. Since 2010 Jan Jansen has been (managing) editor of History in Africa - A Journal of Method (published by the African Studies Association).
