Marlous van den Akker MA, PhD candidate at Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology
Marlous van den Akker

I completed my masters degree in Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University in 2009. During my studies I discovered a special interest in nature conservation issues, particularly in relation to the African continent.

When offered the chance in September 2010 to participate in the Leiden Global Interactions Profile Area, I proposed to carry out a PhD project on African natural heritage. Within this project, which I currently still work on, I focus on Mt. Kenya and I take the area’s 1997 UNESCO World Heritage declaration as point of departure. As such, I look into notions of authenticity, ownership and agency and I explore the ramifications of natural World Heritage claims more generally.
